Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA): The Lion of Courage and Knowledge

Sahaba

The Prophet's cousin, raised in his home, the first child to accept Islam, who slept in the Prophet's bed on the night of the Hijrah and carried the flag of victory at Khaybar.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) was the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ. The seerah books report that Abu Talib, the Prophet's uncle, had many children and little wealth during a year of drought, so the Prophet ﷺ took young Ali into his own home and raised him. When the revelation came, Ali was still a boy, and he became the first child to accept Islam. He grew up in the house of prophethood, learning directly from the Prophet ﷺ.

On the night of the Hijrah, when the leaders of Quraysh plotted to kill the Prophet ﷺ (the Quran refers to their plot in 8:30), the Prophet ﷺ asked Ali to sleep in his bed, covered with his cloak, and to stay behind to return the valuables that the people of Makkah had entrusted to him. Ali risked his life without hesitation, returned every trust to its owner, and then followed the Prophet ﷺ to Madinah.

In Madinah he married Fatimah (RA), the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, and they lived a life of great simplicity. One day the Prophet ﷺ found him lying in the mosque, his side covered with dust, and lovingly woke him saying: "Get up, Abu Turab (father of dust)!" Ali loved this name more than any other. When Fatimah asked her father for a servant to help with the hard housework, the Prophet ﷺ taught them instead to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times before sleeping, and told them this was better for them than a servant.

Ali was a fearless warrior at Badr, Uhud and the Trench. At Khaybar in 7 AH, when the fortresses had resisted for days, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Tomorrow I will give the flag to a man through whose hands Allah will grant victory; he loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." The companions spent the night wondering who it would be. In the morning he called for Ali, who was suffering from sore eyes. The Prophet ﷺ applied his blessed saliva to them and prayed, and they were healed as if nothing had been wrong. He gave him the flag, and Allah granted victory through him.

When the Prophet ﷺ left Ali in charge of his family in Madinah during the Tabuk expedition, Ali felt sad at being left behind with the women and children. The Prophet ﷺ comforted him: "Are you not pleased to be to me like Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?"

Ali was known for his deep knowledge of the Quran and for his wise judgements. He became the fourth Caliph in 35 AH, during a time of great trial for the Ummah. In Ramadan of 40 AH he was attacked by an assassin at the time of the Fajr prayer in Kufa, and died a martyr. His life remains a model of courage, knowledge, simplicity and love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
