Prophet Yaqub (AS) – Beautiful Patience

Stories of the Prophets

Yaqub (AS), also called Israel, was the father of the twelve tribes. He bore the loss of his son Yusuf with beautiful patience, never lost hope in Allah, and was finally reunited with him.

Yaqub (AS), also called Israel (Quran 3:93; 19:58), was the son of Ishaq (AS) and grandson of Ibrahim (AS). His sons became the ancestors of the twelve tribes of the Children of Israel (Bani Isra'il), which the Quran mentions in 7:160.

Ibrahim (AS) passed on to his sons, as did Yaqub, the same instruction: Allah has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except as Muslims (Quran 2:132). When death approached Yaqub, he gathered his sons and asked what they would worship after him. They replied that they would worship his God and the God of his fathers Ibrahim, Ismail and Ishaq – one God – and to Him they submit (Quran 2:133). This scene shows a prophet-father's concern for his children's faith above everything else.

Most of what the Quran tells about Yaqub appears in the story of his son Yusuf (Surah Yusuf). When young Yusuf told him of his dream of eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him, Yaqub understood its meaning and warned him not to tell his brothers, lest they plot against him (Quran 12:4-6). When the brothers returned with Yusuf's shirt stained with false blood, claiming a wolf had eaten him, Yaqub saw through their story. He said that beautiful patience (sabrun jamil) would be his course, and that Allah's help alone is sought against what they described (Quran 12:18).

Years later, when his youngest son Binyamin was also kept back in Egypt, Yaqub again chose beautiful patience, hoping Allah would bring them all back (Quran 12:83). His grief for Yusuf returned so strongly that his eyes turned white with sorrow, yet he held his grief within (Quran 12:84). He told his sons that he complained of his sorrow and grief only to Allah, and that he knew from Allah what they did not know (Quran 12:86). He sent them to search for Yusuf and his brother, telling them never to despair of Allah's mercy, for only those who disbelieve despair of it (Quran 12:87).

His hope was fulfilled. When Yusuf's shirt was placed over his face, his sight returned (Quran 12:96). The family travelled to Egypt, where Yusuf welcomed his parents and raised them on the throne (Quran 12:99-100). His sons asked him to seek forgiveness for them, and he promised to pray to his Lord for them (Quran 12:97-98).

Allah describes Yaqub as a man of knowledge, because Allah had taught him (Quran 12:68), and counts him among the righteous leaders granted to Ibrahim (Quran 21:72-73).

Lessons

  • Beautiful patience means enduring without complaining about Allah.
  • Pour out your grief to Allah alone; He hears every complaint.
  • Never despair of Allah's mercy, however long the trial.
  • A parent's greatest concern should be the faith of their children.
