Prophet Isa (AS) – The Messiah, Son of Maryam

Stories of the Prophets

Isa (AS) was born miraculously to the virgin Maryam, spoke from the cradle, performed miracles by Allah's permission and called people to worship Allah alone. Allah raised him up, and he will return before the Last Day.

The story of Isa (AS) begins with his mother Maryam, whom the angels told that Allah had chosen her, purified her and chosen her above the women of the worlds (Quran 3:42). Raised under the care of Zakariya (AS), she devoted herself to worship.

One day the angel Jibril came to her in the form of a man. She sought refuge in the Most Merciful from him. He told her he was only a messenger of her Lord, sent to give her a pure son. She asked how she could have a son when no man had touched her and she had never been unchaste. He replied that this was easy for Allah, and that the boy would be a sign for people and a mercy from Him (Quran 19:16-21). Allah explains that the example of Isa is like that of Adam: He created him from dust and said 'Be', and he was (Quran 3:59).

When the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree, she wished she had died before this and been forgotten. She was told not to grieve: Allah had placed a stream beneath her, and if she shook the palm trunk, fresh ripe dates would fall for her (Quran 19:23-26). When she returned carrying the child, her people accused her. She pointed to the baby, and Isa spoke from the cradle: he said he was a servant of Allah, who had given him the Scripture and made him a prophet; Allah had made him blessed wherever he was, commanded him to pray and give zakah as long as he lived, and made him dutiful to his mother; and peace was upon him the day he was born, the day he would die and the day he would be raised alive (Quran 19:27-33).

Allah gave Isa the Injil (Gospel) (Quran 5:46) and clear miracles, all by Allah's permission: he made the shape of a bird from clay, breathed into it and it became a bird; he healed the blind and the leper, and brought the dead back to life (Quran 3:49; 5:110). When the disciples (hawariyyun) asked for a table spread with food from heaven, Allah sent it down as a sign (Quran 5:112-115). Isa also gave glad tidings of a messenger coming after him whose name would be Ahmad (Quran 61:6).

Isa (AS) called the Children of Israel to worship Allah, his Lord and their Lord (Quran 3:51; 19:36). Most rejected him, and some plotted to kill him. The Quran states clearly that they did not kill him and did not crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them; rather, Allah raised him up to Himself (Quran 4:157-158; 3:55). The Quran also records that Isa will bear witness before Allah that he never told people to take him and his mother as gods besides Allah (Quran 5:116-117).

Muslims believe that Isa (AS) will return before the Day of Judgement. The Prophet ﷺ said that the son of Maryam will soon descend among the people as a just judge; he will break the cross, kill the swine and abolish the jizyah, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept it (Sahih al-Bukhari 3448; Sahih Muslim 155). He will kill the Dajjal (Sahih Muslim 2937). His coming is a sign of the Hour (Quran 43:61).

Isa (AS) is one of the messengers of firm resolve (Quran 33:7). Muslims love and honour him and his mother, and no Muslim's faith is complete without believing in him as a noble prophet and servant of Allah.

Lessons

  • Believing in Isa as a prophet and servant of Allah is part of Islamic faith.
