Prophet Idris (AS) – Raised to a High Station

Stories of the Prophets

Idris (AS) is praised in the Quran as truthful, patient and righteous, and Allah raised him to a high station. Little else is known about him with certainty.

Idris (AS) is mentioned by name only twice in the Quran. Allah describes him as a man of truth and a prophet, and says that He raised him to a high station (Quran 19:56-57). He is also listed with Ismail and Dhul-Kifl among those who were patient, whom Allah admitted into His mercy, for they were among the righteous (Quran 21:85-86).

Most scholars place him early in human history, after Adam (AS) and before Nuh (AS), although this comes from historical reports rather than an explicit text. Some commentators identify him with Enoch (Akhnukh) of the Biblical tradition; this is an opinion, not something stated in the Quran or authentic hadith.

In the authentic hadith of the Mi'raj (Ascension), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met Idris (AS) in the fourth heaven, and Idris welcomed him as a righteous brother and a righteous prophet (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207; Sahih Muslim 162). Many scholars explain the 'high station' mentioned in the Quran in the light of this.

Various stories circulate about Idris – that he was the first to write with a pen, the first to sew clothes, or the first to study the stars and arithmetic. Some historians and commentators mention these things, but they are not established by the Quran or authentic hadith, so we do not treat them as certain.

What we do know is enough to inspire us: he was truthful, a prophet, patient and righteous, and Allah honoured him greatly.

Lessons

  • Truthfulness is a quality Allah praises in His prophets.
  • Patience and righteousness bring a person into Allah's mercy.
  • We should hold back from treating unverified stories as fact.
