Ibrahim (AS) stood alone against idol worship, was saved from the fire, passed every test of sacrifice, and with Ismail built the Ka'bah. Allah took him as His close friend (Khalil).
Ibrahim (AS) grew up among a people who worshipped idols and heavenly bodies; his own father, Azar, worshipped idols (Quran 6:74). From his youth Allah gave him sound guidance (Quran 21:51). He reasoned with his people about a star, the moon and the sun: each one set and disappeared, and he declared that he did not love things that set. He turned his face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, and said he was not of those who associate partners with Allah (Quran 6:75-79).
He called his father gently, addressing him again and again as 'my dear father', asking why he worshipped what can neither hear nor see nor benefit him at all. His father threatened to stone him and told him to leave. Ibrahim replied with a greeting of peace and promised to ask his Lord to forgive him (Quran 19:41-47). Later, when it became clear that his father was an enemy of Allah, he disassociated himself from him (Quran 9:114).
While his people were away, Ibrahim (AS) broke their idols into pieces, all except the largest. When they demanded to know who had done this, he told them to ask the idols, if they could speak. For a moment they turned to their own consciences and admitted they were wrong, then fell back, saying he knew the idols could not speak. He asked how they could worship, besides Allah, things that could neither benefit nor harm them (Quran 21:57-67).
They decided to burn him alive. A great fire was built and he was thrown into it, but Allah commanded the fire to be coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Quran 21:68-70). Ibn Abbas reported that Ibrahim's words when he was thrown into the fire were: Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil – Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best Disposer of affairs (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563).
He also debated a king who claimed power over life and death. When Ibrahim said that Allah brings the sun up from the east and challenged him to bring it from the west, the disbeliever was left speechless (Quran 2:258).
Ibrahim (AS) left his homeland for the sake of Allah (Quran 29:26; 37:99). Allah tested him with commands and he fulfilled them all, so Allah made him a leader (imam) for mankind (Quran 2:124). By Allah's command he settled his wife Hajar and infant son Ismail in the barren valley of Makkah, praying for them (Quran 14:37). Later came the greatest test: he saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son. When both father and son submitted to Allah's command, Allah called out that he had fulfilled the vision and ransomed the son with a great sacrifice (Quran 37:102-107). Muslims commemorate this every Eid al-Adha.
Angels visited Ibrahim in human form; he hurried to serve them a roasted calf, and they gave him glad tidings of a son, Ishaq, from his elderly wife Sarah (Quran 11:69-72; 51:24-30). With Ismail he raised the foundations of the Ka'bah, praying that Allah accept it from them and send a messenger from their descendants (Quran 2:127-129) – a prayer answered in Muhammad ﷺ. Allah commanded him to proclaim the Hajj to all people (Quran 22:27).
Allah took Ibrahim as His close friend (Khalil) (Quran 4:125), described him as a nation in himself, devoutly obedient to Allah (Quran 16:120), and made him an excellent example for the believers (Quran 60:4). Muslims send blessings upon him in every prayer.
