Noorani Qaida نورانی قاعدہ

Learn the Arabic letters, harakat, tanween, madd and joining step by step. Tap any item to hear it (uses your device’s Arabic voice).

Lesson 1: Arabic Letters (Huroof-e-Mufradat) سبق ۱: حروفِ مفردات

The Quran is written with 29 Arabic letters. Learn to recognise each letter on its own and say its name clearly from the correct place in the mouth or throat.

قرآن مجید ۲۹ عربی حروف سے لکھا گیا ہے۔ ہر حرف کو الگ الگ پہچانیں اور اس کا نام صحیح مخرج سے صاف ادا کریں۔

Tips
  • Read every letter by its name, slowly, from right to left.
  • Do not mix up similar letters: ث س ص, ذ ز ظ ض, ح ه, ت ط, ك ق, ء ع.
  • Heavy letters (خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ) are always pronounced with a full mouth.
  • Practise until you can name any letter instantly when your teacher points at it.

Lesson 2: Compound Letters (Murakkabat) سبق ۲: حروفِ مرکبات

In writing, Arabic letters join together and change shape at the start, middle and end of a word. Read each group by naming its letters one by one.

لکھنے میں عربی حروف آپس میں مل جاتے ہیں اور شروع، درمیان اور آخر میں ان کی شکل بدل جاتی ہے۔ ہر مجموعے کے حروف کے نام الگ الگ پڑھیں۔

Tips
  • Find the 'teeth' and dots of each letter: ب ت ث ن ي look alike when joined and differ only by dots.
  • ا د ذ ر ز و never join to the letter after them.
  • لا is Lam joined with Alif; read it as 'Lam-Alif'.
  • Name the letters only; do not try to read the group as a word yet.
  • ہر حرف کے دندانے اور نقطے پہچانیں: ب ت ث ن ی ملنے کے بعد صرف نقطوں سے پہچانے جاتے ہیں۔
  • ا د ذ ر ز و اپنے بعد والے حرف سے نہیں ملتے۔
  • لا لام اور الف کا مجموعہ ہے، اسے ’لام الف‘ پڑھیں۔
  • ابھی صرف حروف کے نام پڑھیں، لفظ بنا کر نہ پڑھیں۔

Lesson 3: Disjointed Letters (Huroof-e-Muqatta'at) سبق ۳: حروفِ مقطعات

Twenty-nine surahs begin with separate letters such as الم and يس. They are always read by their letter names. Their true meaning is known only to Allah.

قرآن کی ۲۹ سورتوں کے شروع میں الگ الگ حروف آتے ہیں جیسے الٓمّٓ اور یٰسٓ۔ انہیں ہمیشہ حروف کے نام سے پڑھا جاتا ہے۔ ان کا اصل مطلب اللہ ہی جانتا ہے۔

Tips
  • Read each letter by its name, e.g. الم = Alif-Lam-Meem.
  • Where a madd sign appears on a letter (e.g. on Lam and Meem of الم), stretch it to 6 counts.
  • In الم the Meem of 'Lam' merges into the Meem that follows, giving a ghunnah.
  • ہر حرف کو اس کے نام سے پڑھیں، جیسے الٓمّٓ = الف لام میم۔
  • جن حروف پر مد کا نشان ہو (جیسے الٓمّٓ کے لام اور میم پر) انہیں چھ حرکت کے برابر کھینچیں۔
  • الٓمّٓ میں لام کی میم اگلی میم میں مدغم ہو کر غُنّہ کے ساتھ پڑھی جاتی ہے۔

Lesson 4: Short Vowels (Harakat: Zabar, Zer, Pesh) سبق ۴: حرکات (زبر، زیر، پیش)

A haraka is a short vowel mark. Zabar (ـَ) gives an 'a' sound, zer (ـِ) an 'i' sound and pesh (ـُ) a 'u' sound. A letter with a haraka is called mutaharrik and is read quickly, without stretching.

زبر، زیر اور پیش کو حرکات کہتے ہیں۔ زبر (ـَ) سے ’اَ‘، زیر (ـِ) سے ’اِ‘ اور پیش (ـُ) سے ’اُ‘ کی آواز نکلتی ہے۔ حرکت والے حرف کو متحرک کہتے ہیں اور اسے کھینچے بغیر جلدی پڑھتے ہیں۔

Tips
  • First spell it (Ba zabar 'ba'), then read it directly (ba).
  • Do not stretch: بَ is 'ba', not 'baa'.
  • With zabar open the mouth, with zer lower the jaw, with pesh round the lips.
  • Keep heavy letters heavy even with zer: صِ is not سِ.
  • پہلے ہجے کریں (بے زبر بَ) پھر رواں پڑھیں (بَ)۔
  • آواز نہ کھینچیں: بَ کو ’با‘ نہ پڑھیں۔
  • زبر میں منہ کھولیں، زیر میں جبڑا نیچے کریں، پیش میں ہونٹ گول کریں۔
  • زیر کے ساتھ بھی پُر حروف موٹے ہی پڑھیں: صِ اور سِ میں فرق رکھیں۔

Lesson 5: Tanween (Double Vowels) سبق ۵: تنوین (دو زبر، دو زیر، دو پیش)

Tanween is a doubled haraka: do zabar (ـً), do zer (ـٍ) and do pesh (ـٌ). It adds a hidden 'n' sound after the vowel: بً = ban, بٍ = bin, بٌ = bun.

دو زبر (ـً)، دو زیر (ـٍ) اور دو پیش (ـٌ) کو تنوین کہتے ہیں۔ تنوین میں حرکت کے بعد نون ساکن کی آواز آتی ہے: بً = بَن، بٍ = بِن، بٌ = بُن۔

Tips
  • Tanween is written as two marks but is read as one short vowel plus 'n'.
  • Tanween only comes on the last letter of a word.
  • When stopping on do zabar read a long 'aa' (عَلِيمًا → ʿaleemaa); on do zer or do pesh read the letter with sukoon.
  • تنوین دو نشان ہیں لیکن ایک حرکت اور نون ساکن کی طرح پڑھی جاتی ہے۔
  • تنوین صرف لفظ کے آخری حرف پر آتی ہے۔
  • دو زبر پر وقف کریں تو الف کی آواز سے پڑھیں (عَلِیْمًا ← عَلِیْمَا)، دو زیر اور دو پیش پر ساکن کر دیں۔

Lesson 6: Practice of Harakat and Tanween سبق ۶: حرکات اور تنوین کی مشق

Now join letters with harakat and tanween to read real words. Spell each word first, then read it smoothly in one breath.

اب حرکات اور تنوین والے حروف ملا کر اصل الفاظ پڑھیں۔ پہلے ہجے کریں پھر ایک سانس میں رواں پڑھیں۔

Tips
  • Spelling example: خَ لَ قَ → Kha zabar kha, Lam zabar la, Qaf zabar qa → khalaqa.
  • Keep every haraka short and equal in length.
  • Pay attention to heavy letters inside words (ق ص ط غ).
  • ہجے کی مثال: خَ لَ قَ ← خے زبر خَ، لام زبر لَ، قاف زبر قَ ← خَلَقَ۔
  • ہر حرکت کو چھوٹا اور برابر رکھیں۔
  • الفاظ کے اندر پُر حروف (ق ص ط غ) کا خاص خیال رکھیں۔

Lesson 7: Khari Zabar, Khari Zer and Ulta Pesh سبق ۷: کھڑا زبر، کھڑا زیر اور الٹا پیش

These are the standing (long) vowel signs used in the Pakistani / Indo-Pak Mushaf. Khari zabar (ـٰ) is read like a zabar followed by Alif, khari zer (ـٖ) like a zer followed by Ya, and ulta pesh (ـٗ) like a pesh followed by Waw — each stretched for two counts.

یہ پاکستانی (انڈو پاک) مصحف میں لمبی آواز کے نشانات ہیں۔ کھڑا زبر (ـٰ) زبر اور الف کی طرح، کھڑا زیر (ـٖ) زیر اور یاء کی طرح، اور الٹا پیش (ـٗ) پیش اور واؤ کی طرح پڑھا جاتا ہے — ہر ایک کو ایک الف (دو حرکت) کے برابر کھینچیں۔

Tips
  • Stretch each standing vowel for 2 counts (about the time of two short vowels).
  • بٰ = baa, بٖ = bee, بٗ = boo.
  • In the word اللّٰهُ the khari zabar on Lam gives 'Allaah'.
  • Arabic text-to-speech may not know these Indo-Pak signs, so the app speaks an equivalent spelling.
  • ہر کھڑی حرکت کو دو حرکت (ایک الف) کے برابر کھینچیں۔
  • بٰ = با، بٖ = بی، بٗ = بو۔
  • لفظ اَللّٰهُ میں لام پر کھڑا زبر ہے، اس لیے ’اللّاہ‘ کی طرح لمبا پڑھیں۔

Lesson 8: Letters of Madd (Huroof-e-Maddah) سبق ۸: حروفِ مدّہ

The three letters of madd are Alif, Waw and Ya. Alif after a zabar, sakin Waw after a pesh and sakin Ya after a zer stretch the sound for two counts: بَا baa, بِيْ bee, بُوْ boo.

حروفِ مدّہ تین ہیں: الف، واؤ اور یاء۔ الف سے پہلے زبر ہو، واؤ ساکن سے پہلے پیش ہو اور یاء ساکن سے پہلے زیر ہو تو آواز کو ایک الف (دو حرکت) کے برابر کھینچتے ہیں: بَا، بِيْ، بُوْ۔

Tips
  • The madd letter itself is not pronounced as a separate letter; it only lengthens the vowel before it.
  • Keep the length the same each time — two counts, no more, no less.
  • Compare: بَ (ba) and بَا (baa) — mixing them can change the meaning.
  • حرفِ مدّہ الگ سے ادا نہیں ہوتا، صرف پچھلی حرکت کو لمبا کرتا ہے۔
  • ہر بار لمبائی برابر رکھیں — نہ کم نہ زیادہ، صرف ایک الف۔
  • بَ اور بَا میں فرق کریں — چھوٹی بڑی آواز بدلنے سے معنی بدل سکتے ہیں۔

Lesson 9: Letters of Leen (Huroof-e-Leen) سبق ۹: حروفِ لین

Waw sakin or Ya sakin preceded by a zabar are called letters of leen (softness). They are read softly and quickly, without a jerk: بَوْ baw, بَيْ bay.

واؤ ساکن یا یاء ساکن سے پہلے زبر ہو تو انہیں حروفِ لین کہتے ہیں۔ انہیں نرمی سے، بغیر جھٹکے کے جلدی پڑھتے ہیں: بَوْ، بَيْ۔

Tips
  • Leen is not stretched in normal reading; only when you stop on the following letter may it be lengthened (madd leen).
  • Do not turn بَيْ into 'bee' or خَوْف into 'khoof'.
  • عام پڑھائی میں لین کو نہیں کھینچتے، صرف اس کے بعد والے حرف پر وقف کریں تو لمبا کر سکتے ہیں (مدِّ لین)۔
  • بَيْ کو ’بی‘ اور خَوْف کو ’خوف (خُوف)‘ نہ پڑھیں۔

Lesson 10: Sukoon / Jazm سبق ۱۰: سکون / جزم

The sukoon (jazm, ـْ) shows that a letter has no vowel. A sakin letter is joined to the vowel before it: أَبْ = ab, قُلْ = qul.

جزم (ـْ) کا مطلب ہے کہ حرف پر کوئی حرکت نہیں۔ ساکن حرف کو اپنے سے پہلے والے متحرک حرف کے ساتھ ملا کر پڑھتے ہیں: اَبْ، قُلْ۔

Tips
  • Never add a vowel to a sakin letter: قُلْ is 'qul', not 'qulu'.
  • Sakin ق ط ب ج د bounce slightly (qalqalah): أَقْ, أَطْ, أَبْ, أَجْ, أَدْ.
  • Sakin Noon and Meem have special rules that you will learn in Lesson 14.
  • ساکن حرف پر کوئی حرکت نہ لگائیں: قُلْ کو ’قُلُ‘ نہ پڑھیں۔
  • ق ط ب ج د ساکن ہوں تو ان میں ہلکی سی جنبش (قلقلہ) ہوتی ہے: اَقْ، اَطْ، اَبْ، اَجْ، اَدْ۔
  • نون ساکن اور میم ساکن کے خاص قاعدے سبق ۱۴ میں آئیں گے۔

Lesson 11: Shaddah (Tashdeed) سبق ۱۱: تشدید (شدّ)

The shaddah (ـّ) doubles a letter: the first is sakin and joins the vowel before it, the second carries the vowel written with the shaddah. أَبَّ = ab-ba.

تشدید (ـّ) والا حرف دو بار پڑھا جاتا ہے: پہلا ساکن ہو کر پچھلے حرف سے ملتا ہے اور دوسرا اپنی حرکت کے ساتھ ادا ہوتا ہے۔ اَبَّ = اَبْ بَ۔

Tips
  • Press on the doubled letter: 'Rab-bi', not 'Rabi'.
  • Noon and Meem with shaddah are always read with ghunnah (nasal sound) for two counts: إِنَّ, ثُمَّ.
  • Missing a shaddah can change the meaning of a word, so treat it carefully.
  • مشدد حرف پر زور دیں: ’رَبْ بِ‘ نہ کہ ’رَبِ‘۔
  • نون اور میم مشدد ہمیشہ غُنّہ کے ساتھ ایک الف کے برابر پڑھے جاتے ہیں: اِنَّ، ثُمَّ۔
  • تشدید چھوڑ دینے سے معنی بدل سکتے ہیں، اس لیے احتیاط کریں۔

Lesson 12: Shaddah with Tanween سبق ۱۲: تشدید کے ساتھ تنوین

Here a doubled letter also carries tanween at the end of the word: حَقٌّ = ḥaq-qun. Read the shaddah firmly and then the tanween.

اس سبق میں مشدد حرف کے ساتھ آخر میں تنوین بھی ہے: حَقٌّ = حَقْ قُنْ۔ پہلے تشدید پر زور دیں پھر تنوین پڑھیں۔

Tips
  • Spell first: حَقٌّ → Ḥa zabar ḥa, Qaf with shaddah and do pesh qqun → ḥaqqun.
  • Do not drop the hidden 'n' of the tanween.
  • پہلے ہجے کریں: حَقٌّ ← حا زبر حَ، قاف مشدد دو پیش قُنْ ← حَقٌّ۔
  • تنوین کے نون کی آواز ضائع نہ کریں۔

Lesson 13: Madd (Lengthening) Sign سبق ۱۳: مد کا نشان

The wavy madd sign (ـٓ) over a madd letter means stretch it longer than normal. If a hamzah follows in the same word (madd muttasil) stretch 4–5 counts; if the hamzah begins the next word (madd munfasil) stretch 4–5 counts as taught in Pakistan (Hafs through Shatibiyyah); if a shaddah or sukoon follows (madd lazim) stretch a full 6 counts.

Tips
  • Count with your fingers while learning: one finger per haraka.
  • Madd lazim (before shaddah/sukoon) is always 6 counts — never shorten it.
  • Be consistent: use the same length for every muttasil, and the same for every munfasil, in one recitation.
  • سیکھتے وقت انگلیوں پر گنیں: ہر حرکت کے لیے ایک انگلی۔
  • مدِّ لازم (تشدید یا سکون سے پہلے) ہمیشہ ۶ حرکت ہے — اسے کم نہ کریں۔
  • ایک تلاوت میں ہر مدِّ متصل اور ہر مدِّ منفصل کو برابر لمبا پڑھیں۔

Lesson 14: Rules of Noon Sakin, Tanween and Meem Sakin سبق ۱۴: نون ساکن، تنوین اور میم ساکن کے قاعدے

Noon sakin and tanween are read in four ways depending on the next letter: Izhar (clear) before throat letters ء ه ع ح غ خ; Idgham (merging) into ي ن م و with ghunnah and into ل ر without ghunnah; Iqlab (changing to Meem) before ب; and Ikhfa (hiding with ghunnah) before the remaining 15 letters. Meem sakin is hidden before ب, merged into م, and read clearly before all other letters.

Tips
  • Ghunnah is a nasal sound from the nose held for two counts.
  • The word يَرْمَلُوْنَ gives the six letters of idgham: ي ر م ل و ن.
  • Iqlab is shown in the Mushaf by a small Meem (ۢ) above the Noon or tanween.
  • See the Tajweed section for full details and more Quranic examples.

Lesson 15: Quranic Practice and Waqf (Stop) Signs سبق ۱۵: قرآنی مشق اور رموزِ اوقاف

Read short Quranic phrases using everything you have learnt, and learn the stop signs printed in the Mushaf. They tell you where you must, should, may or must not stop.

اب تک سیکھے ہوئے تمام قاعدوں کے ساتھ چھوٹے قرآنی جملے پڑھیں اور مصحف میں لکھے ہوئے رموزِ اوقاف سیکھیں۔ یہ بتاتے ہیں کہ کہاں ٹھہرنا ضروری، بہتر، جائز یا منع ہے۔

Tips
  • When you stop, make the last letter sakin; on do zabar read a long 'aa'; a round ة becomes 'h'.
  • Never stop in the middle of a word or at a لا sign; if your breath breaks, go back and join.
  • The waqf signs are recitation aids; the app speaks their names, not the symbols.
