Eid Prayer (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha)

Muslims have two Eids: Eid al-Fitr on 1 Shawwal after Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha on 10 Dhul Hijjah. The Eid prayer is two rak'ahs with extra takbirs, prayed in congregation after sunrise, followed by a khutbah. In the Hanafi school it is wajib on those for whom Jumu'ah is obligatory.

1

Status and time حکم اور وقت

The Eid prayer's time starts about 15–20 minutes after sunrise (when the sun has risen a spear's length) and lasts until just before zawal (midday). There is no adhan or iqamah for Eid. It is Sunnah to pray Eid al-Adha early and Eid al-Fitr slightly later.

Hanafi: wajib. Shafi'i and Maliki: Sunnah mu'akkadah. Hanbali: fard kifayah.
Sahih Muslim 887

Sunnahs of the Eid day

Wake early, take a ghusl, use miswak, wear your best clothes and perfume. On Eid al-Fitr eat an odd number of dates (or something sweet) before leaving; on Eid al-Adha delay eating until after the prayer (ideally from your sacrifice). Walk to the Eidgah if possible, and return by a different route.

Sahih al-Bukhari 953; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 542; Sahih al-Bukhari 986

Takbir on the way

Say the Eid takbir on the way to the prayer. For Eid al-Adha say it aloud; for Eid al-Fitr Hanafis say it quietly, while the other schools say it aloud for both.

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.

Qur'an 2:185; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (from Ibn Mas'ud)

Intention and opening

Intend: 'I am praying two rak'ahs wajib of Eid al-Fitr (or Eid al-Adha) with six extra takbirs, for Allah, behind this imam.' Say the opening takbir, fold the hands and recite Thana.

Meaning: Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. Blessed is Your Name, exalted is Your Majesty, and there is no god besides You.

First rak'ah: three extra takbirs

After Thana, the imam says three extra takbirs. With the first two, raise the hands to the ears and drop them to the sides; with the third, raise the hands and fold them. Pause between takbirs for about the time of saying 'Subhanallah' three times. Then the imam recites al-Fatiha and a surah aloud, and the rak'ah is completed with ruku and two sajdahs.

Allahu Akbar

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest.

Sunan Abi Dawud 1153

Second rak'ah: takbirs before ruku

In the second rak'ah the imam first recites al-Fatiha and a surah, then says three extra takbirs: raise the hands and drop them at each of the three. At the fourth takbir go straight into ruku without raising the hands. Complete the prayer as normal with Tashahhud, Durood, Dua and Salam.

This 6-takbir method is Hanafi. Shafi'is say 7 extra takbirs in the first rak'ah and 5 in the second, all before recitation; Malikis and Hanbalis say 6 (after the opening takbir) and 5. Follow your imam's method in congregation. It is Sunnah to recite al-A'la and al-Ghashiyah, or Qaf and al-Qamar.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1153; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 536; Sahih Muslim 878; Sahih Muslim 891

Khutbah after the prayer

Unlike Jumu'ah, the Eid khutbah comes after the prayer. Stay seated and listen to it; it is Sunnah to listen. Then greet one another, e.g. 'Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum'.

Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum.

Meaning: May Allah accept from us and from you.

Sahih al-Bukhari 956

Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana)

Before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, every Muslim who owns the nisab beyond basic needs pays Sadaqat al-Fitr for himself and his minor children, to purify the fast and feed the poor. Hanafi amount: half a sa' of wheat or one sa' of dates, barley or raisins, or its cash value. Local scholars announce the amount in rupees each year.

Shafi'is, Malikis and Hanbalis require one sa' of a staple food for everyone who has food beyond the day's need, and most of them prefer giving food rather than cash.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1503; Sunan Abi Dawud 1609

Eid al-Adha: Qurbani and Takbirat at-Tashriq

On Eid al-Adha, slaughter the sacrificial animal after the Eid prayer, on 10, 11 or 12 Dhul Hijjah. From Fajr of 9 Dhul Hijjah until 'Asr of 13 Dhul Hijjah, say the Takbir of Tashriq (the Eid takbir above) once after every fard prayer.

Meaning: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.

Hanafis hold Qurbani wajib on every resident Muslim who owns the nisab; the other schools consider it a strongly emphasised Sunnah. Shafi'is and Hanbalis allow sacrifice until sunset of 13 Dhul Hijjah. One who intends to sacrifice should not cut hair or nails from 1 Dhul Hijjah until the sacrifice.
